Description
David H. Wells is a freelance documentary photographer based in Providence, Rhode Island. He is affiliated with Aurora Photos and specializes in intercultural communications and the use of light and shadow to enhance visual narratives. He also produces multi-media projects as well as focusing on photo-essays for publication and exhibition, including magazines, brochures, and annual reports. He has produced images for local, national and international clientele. Past assignments include Life Magazine, National Geographic Publications and the New York Times Magazine. Wells has produced 16 photo-essays for the award winning Philadelphia Inquirer Sunday Magazine. Portfolios of his work have appeared in American Photography Four, Camera and Darkroom, Communication Arts Photography Annual, Graphics: The Human Condition, Photo District News, Photo Magazine, Photographers International and Zoom. Wells has also won numerous awards and fellowships including Pictures of the Year Magazine Documentary work in 1990, 1991 and 1992. He was a MacArthur Foundation scholar from 1991-1992, a Fulbright Lecturer in Mysore, India in 1999, an Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellow in 2001 and a Fulbright scholar in 2005. Wells also teaches workshops around the world, and has recently launched an online educational tool with video podcasts and other useful information for photographers called “The Wells Point."
