Welcome to Europe's most photogenic city
Prague’s long association with film and photography is hardly surprising. From its earliest days, its annexation by the Roman Empire, the Hapsburg era, the affluence of the First Republic through the austerity of Communist rule the city has always had a story to tell and today is another chapter.
Prague’s artistic heritage includes composers such as Antonin Dvorak, Bedrich Smetana, writers like Franz Kafka, Milan Kundera and Karel Capek and photographers such as Josef Sudek, Joesf Koudelka and Antonin Krachtovil. The depth and complexity of the city is not easily understood, but captivates the soul and brings visitors back time and again. Prague Workshops provides a unique opportunity for photographers from around the world to add their own interpretation of the beauty and culture that is Prague.
Prague emerged into the twenty-first century a melting pot of cultures, architectural styles and social statements that provides endless material for those with an eye for a story. In the magical city of Prague medieval rubs shoulders with modern; its museums, galleries, castles, synagogues, churches and architecture inspire any photographer to make unique and wonderful portfolio pictures. Many of Prague’s most significant historical sites are within walking distance of the Richteruv dum, where all our workshops are located, and our teachers will make ample use of the city.
Students at the Prague Workshops will sense the juxtaposition of past and present that is unique to Prague and Central Europe. Questions of European unity, the role of NATO, minority rights, and the economics of transition come alive alongside the legacy of the great photographers, composers and artists whose impact on Prague remains vibrant. Even Richteruv dum itself is on Male Namesti, the very heart of Prague, in a 15th-century building only a few feet away from the Old Town square and Prague's famous astronomical clock.
The building has been restored to its original detail with painted wooden beams and arched entryway. Our classroom, on the first floor, is equipped with lots of plugs, large tables, for computers and cameras, a digital projector and screen for presentations. Additionally, students will have access to the student lounge just outside of the classroom.
