What's new in the Prague Workshops Community?

Welcome to the Prague Workshop community page. On these pages you'll find links to really great photo galleries, multiple camera and lens reviews, announcements of firmware and software updates, links to contests, announcements of contest winners, photo industry and general photo news, tips from our instructors and anything which may be related to photography. Dive in and have a look around and if you have anything you want to contribute, just use the button on the upper right to post your own query. And unlike some other sites, if you want to promote your business, go ahead, if you think it'll help people become better photographers, well, that's what it's all about.

We have added new categories for postings so if you want to find, say a camera review, just type in Camera Review in the search box above and it'll pull all the results for you. This is important because we've posted more than one review for a lot of cameras so you'll have access to a variety of opinions. If you are considering splashing out a couple of thousand dollars for a new camera or lens it's not bad to see what a lot of people have to say. We'll put a drop down in the search box soon so all the categories will show up if you want to look at all the camera or lens reviews. Of course you can always type your own search words as well.

We are offering a new photo sightseeing tour with pro photographers. If you are in Prague and don't have the time for a workshop, you can still get a day of instruction from a working professional and take amazing photos of Prague as well. Have a look at our photo tours page and for examples of what our pros shoot, have a look at the Prague Picture Gallery

If you want to post, use the Submit a new post button under the Join Us on the right of your screen and then you can start writing about whatever you want. Let's get the conversation started!

Good luck and we hope to hear from everyone soon!

The One Man Band

The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz has a very interesting column today on the "one-man band." He interviews Scott Broom, a former "coat and tie" journalist for 27 years and had to reinvent himself with the aid of a three-day boot camp. It's a good article and a highly suggested read.

This, by the way,  is exactly what our Platypus Multimedia workshop is for, to help photographers who want to expand their knowledge into video and to turn reporters into video journalists to the point where they can do it all. Both Dirck Halstead and PF Bentley have been teaching this course a long time (ten years) and they know how to make journalists into better, all around journalists.

While this new lens is designed for digital SLR cameras, it can be used with both full-frame sensor and AF 35mm cameras with a zoom range of 70-300mm; or with APS-C sensor cameras where the angle of view will change the zoom range equal to 109-465mm*4.

With superior optical performance, Tamron’s own USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) and VC (Vibration Compensation), the SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD (Model A005) provides the performance of a high-end premium telephoto zoom that is appealing to a broad spectrum of photography enthusiasts.

Olympic Games Wrapup

So, the Olymics are over! We are now hosting the Paralympic games which are similar but very different. I'm now the Venue Photo Manager at Sledge Hockey which is an indoor venue, for another two weeks. I'm still shaking my head at how incredibly fast the actual Olympic Games went by after two and half years of preparation. Here are a few observations still fresh in my mind.

Plan as much as possible: we did for over two years, down to the very last detail. In the end however, be prepared to toss your plan right out the window, which is what we had to do. The warmest winter on record meant we had to scramble for all our outdoor events where I was involved at Cypress for Freestyle and Snowboard events. For three of the Finals, the course was only available on that day, (rather than days before) and frequently we had nothing set up an hour before the start of the event. It was incredible and sometimes a bit tense. So, plan plan and replan: it shows you what you need to have, rather than what you're going to get. Be flexible, know your stuff and be prepared for the worst case scenario.

As promised, here's another review of the Canon EOS-7D. We'll try to post as many good reviews of various cameras as we can find so you can compare the camera and the reviews all in one easy place. Without further ado:

The long-rumored Canon 7D has finally materialized: an advanced subframe digital SLR that Canon says is in the same class as the 5D Mark II. This is not the 60D with a new name, we're told, but a whole new line; whether the 7D supplants the 50D is not clear.

Valuing creativity in music (and photography)

I recently wrote about the similarities and differences between music and photography. While we experience each through very different senses, they also have a lot in common. Both have long, rich histories, which I pondered briefly in the last blog entry. This week, I am thinking about the fact that while both are used artistically [...]

Well, I know this is supposed to be a travel photography blog, and I have been traveling lately (but again, can’t show the results just yet due to legal issues), but I am having a stone-cold blast working on my “New Hope: In Character” community portrait project.

Camera Review Panasonic Lumix G2 and G10

Ian Burley from Four-Thirds User was at the Focus on Imaging show in Birmingham, England and he was able to get his hands on the new Panasonic Lumix G2 and G10 and see how they operate. He has also posted some pictures of both the new cameras and the new Lumix vario 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. These two cameras represent the seventh and eighth micro four-thirds models introduced to the public from either Panasonic Lumix or Olympus in the last 18 months. Ian has a video on the new touch-screen on the back of the G2 as well. Below is the lead to his article and you may click through to read it in its entirety.
